Sunir J. Garg, MD, discusses the evolution of treatment options for patients with diabetic macular edema (DME) that he has witnessed throughout his career. The first patients with DME were treated with focal and pan-retinal lasers, which slowed down vision loss and prevented blindness.
However, when intravitreal injections were introduced, first with steroids and then with anti–vascular endothelial growth factor medicines, this resulted in improved vision for patients that lasted for months or even years. Compared with lasers, patients should know that intravitreal injections are a greater commitment that require up to two dozen treatments.
